Lights Out Fort Worth Team Members and Volunteers

Organization: Texas Conservation Alliance, state affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation

Location: Based in the DFW area, with a primary focus in Fort Worth, TX.

Start/End: February 10, 2025 – December 31, 2025

Compensation: $22- $25 per hour, depending on experience (Part-time, 32 hours per week)

For over 50 years Texas Conservation Alliance (TCA) has advocated for wildlife and their habitats. Mission: TCA educates Texans and builds alliances to enhance and sustain wildlife habitat and to protect our land, air, and water for future generations. TCA has built public support to establish numerous public wildlife areas, resulting in more than 250,000 Texas acres protected. TCA has recruited thousands of Texans to active conservation and successful advocacy through grassroots coalitions and community-driven, hands-on, habitat restoration programs that welcome all communities into conservation and promote stewardship for Texas’ wildlife and wild places.

 

General Summary

The Lights Out Fort Worth and Education Program Coordinator is a part-time position (32 hours/week). The coordinator works closely with community partners, teachers, and schools, and reports to the TCA Community Conservation Director.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and conduct early morning bird-window collision surveys on foot in downtown Fort Worth during bird migration periods to gather data and rehabilitate injured birds.

  • Finalize the existing Lights Out, Texas! Curriculum and promote it to both formal and informal educational institutions.

  • Evaluate and improve the current TCA’s education and outreach materials.

Responsibilities

Bird Collision Surveys & Community Outreach Programs in Fort Worth

  • Promote Lights Out Fort Worth campaign to work with Fort Worth and other Tarrant County entities, including governments, individual building owners and managers, local conservation organizations, local press and media outlets, and community members to increase awareness and take action to protect birds.

  • Analyze data collected and write and distribute electronic reports summarizing survey highlights to keep internal and external audiences informed of Lights Out Fort Worth.

  • Recruit and manage TCA Lights Out Fort Worth education intern and liaise with the University of Oklahoma and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

  • Lead bird-window collision surveys 2- 3 days per week during survey period, including collecting deceased birds and transporting injured birds to rehab facility.

  • Coordinate all aspects of volunteer events including recruiting, marketing, logistics, communication, documentation, and awareness and education campaigns with schools and other student groups.

  • Engage local business and residential buildings and encourages them to sign up for Lights Out for Wildlife Certification.

  • Provide training for survey leaders and coordinates survey schedules.

  • Work proactively to engage diverse audiences and expand conservation accessibility and inclusion.

  • Promote the use of dBird in city-wide and campus-based efforts.


Facilitate Lights Out, Texas! Curriculum

  • Collaborate with partners and teachers to finalize the curricula for 3rd-5th and 6th-8th grades.

  • Work with education program developers to create an interactive activity for 3rd-5th grade students.

  • Host Lights Out, Texas! Curriculum workshops (in-person and virtual).

  • Recruit and engage school teachers, zoos, and nature centers to promote curriculum adoption.

  • Develop and implement evaluation tools to assess program effectiveness.

Evaluate and implement Education and Community Outreach Programs

  • Review and improve current outreach education materials to enhance engagement and effectiveness.

  • Develop and implement evaluation tools to:

    • Align programs with conservation goals and educational objectives.

    • Track and assess program metrics for continuous improvement.

    • Summarize project reports and provide updates and final reports to partners.

  • Lead the development of seminars in collaboration with other Lights Out related programs

  • Continuously improve programs by evaluating their alignment with goals and objectives.

Required Knowledge & Experience and Qualification

  • A minimum of Bachelor’s degree in the field of wildlife conservation, education, or public engagement.

  • 1+ years of demonstrated experience in project management, program management, or program evaluation and improvement.

  • Feel comfortable to pick up deceased birds and rescue injured birds.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to write clear and precise email communication and reports.

  • Demonstrated experience working successfully with volunteers and community groups.

  • Must be self-motivated, organized and skilled in time management.

  • Ability to work both independently, as part of a team, and across teams.

  • Travel outside of Fort Worth to facilitate workshops and visit schools and partners is required. The candidate must possess a valid driver’s license. Mileage reimbursement provided at the current federal rate (.67 per mile).


Desired Qualification

  • Bird and habitat conservation experience a plus.

  • Demonstrated success coordinating events.

  • Be flexible, adaptable, and have a strong attention to detail.

  • Experience with informal and formal presentations.

  • Experience with Canva, Google Drive, spreadsheets, and the standard suite of business tools.


Job Location

This position is based in the DFW area, with a primary focus on Fort Worth, TX.


Physical Abilities and Work Environment

  • Ability to walk outdoors 2-3 hours

  • Ability to work outdoors and early mornings from 6 am – 9 am
