About the Event
Join TCA at LIFE Farms on Saturday, July 20, at 9 am to help propagate native plants for pollinators. We will demonstrate how to prepare potting mix and plant native seeds in preparation for in-ground planting this fall and next spring. The native plants we grow will be used in the Butterfly Garden and at restoration sites in Lufkin, and across East Texas. We will work in the Butterfly Garden for a little while and then head inside before it gets too hot.
Native wildflowers are a vital resource for local and migrating pollinators. Hummingbirds and bees use the flowers for nectar, and many butterflies rely on specific host plants for their larva. A host plant is one caterpillars use for food as they develop into butterflies. Did you know that monarch caterpillars feed almost exclusively on milkweed? Adult monarchs can use many species of flowers for nectar, but we must ensure these beautiful and iconic butterflies have the plants vital for their young as they migrate through our area.
