About the Event
Help make the Alief Super Neighborhood more resilient to urban heat island effects. Join TCA and our event sponsors on Saturday, January 20, 2024, from 9 am to 12 pm in planting over 300 trees along Bissonnet Street and participate with area residents in the FREE TREE GIVEAWAY! Tree giveaway is first come, first served.
Why plant trees?
Roads, parking lots, and large buildings retain more heat per day from the sun than natural landscapes do. This heat retention causes cities to experience higher temperatures when compared to surrounding rural areas. These microclimates are known as URBAN HEAT ISLANDS.
- Trees counteract the effects of urban heat islands by improving air circulation. Acting as natural windbreaks, trees slow and redirect hot winds. This reduces temperatures to provide a community-wide cooling effect.
- Shade from trees prevents asphalt and concrete surfaces from absorbing as much solar radiation. This helps keep these surfaces cooler and contributes further to temperature reduction.
